Lisbon Airport Guide: Everything You Need to Know (2026)

Lisbon airport has been making it’s rounds on social media, and making headlines due to lengthy lines, congestion, and delays at immigration.

As tourism in Portugal has increased drastically, the capital city’s small airport has, at times, been overwhelmed with international passengers causing long lines at security and passport control. Videos of hours-long, chaotic, lines with panicked passengers have been popping up more and more frequently.

But, is Lisbon airport really that bad?

No.

At least, it isn’t about 95% of the time.

I have been traveling in and out of Lisbon consistently over the past 5 years (with over 30 flights in and out) and in this time have had 1 instance where I faced lengthy lines entering the country, which was right before Easter, and 1 instance where I questioned if I was going to make a departing flight… but I also arrived at the airport less than 90 minutes before an international flight (oopsie).

During peak season, holidays, strikes, and random one-offs, yes Lisbon airport can be absolute madness, but that is not the norm.

The current hiccups with the implementation of the European Union’s Electronic Entry System (EES) is causing some delays currently (April 2026) and may continue to cause some delays, but again this is sporadic and not the norm.

The best approach to Lisbon airport is “Hope for the best, prepare for the worst”.

This practical guide to Lisbon airport will help you prepare for your arrival and departure in Lisbon, as well as be confident navigating the irport and seamlessly making it through arrivals and departures.

🛬Navigating Lisbon Airport: Arrivals

Generally, international arrivals at Lisbon airport go like this:

Plane lands ➡️passengers are taken to the arrivals terminal via bus➡️enter the terminal and proceed to passport control ➡️enter arrivals hall and proceed to appropriate lane ➡️ follow signs to baggage claim/exit ➡️ exit terminal and proceed to transportation.

Now, let’s break down each step.

Deplaning at Lisbon Airport

In most cases, international arrivals are met with shuttle buses to take passengers from the plane to the terminal.

Things to consider:

This means having to navigate the stairs, as well as carrying your luggage, down from the plane to the tarmac.

This is also the great equalizer when it comes to getting to passport control. Having seats closer to the front of the plane with not be as advantageous due to everyone getting on the shuttles at the same time.

⭐Pro tips to get to passport control ahead of the line

If you can, stay closer to the shuttle doors (without blocking others from entering) to be one of the first off and into the terminal.

If you can, take the stairs when entering the terminal instead of the escalator to get ahead of the line

🛂Passport Control at Lisbon Airport: Arrivals

This is where lines can be lengthy, and confusion can be high.

So, let’s break it down so you know exactly what to do and what to expect.

The MOST important thing to do when entering the arrivals hall, is to pay attention. What I have seen cause the most confusion and delay for many travelers is getting in the wrong line or not being aware of how to use the Electronic Entry.

Who Can Use Electronic Passport at LIS?

Travelers over the age of 18 arriving from the US, UK, Canada, Australia (and other listed countries - look for the flag) can use the Electronic Passport Entry at Lisbon airport. All other passengers must use the “All Passengers” or EU lanes, accordingly.

With very few exceptions, all current passports from these countries are electronic passport entry compatible. If you are unsure your passport is electronic entry compatible, just look for the chip icon on the back cover.

⭐Pro Tip: When going through electronic passport control, hold your passport down. Don’t just slide it in the machine, it will either not read it and give an error, or take much longer.

🚫🧒🏽Children under 18 cannot use the electronic passport control lines

This is a protective measure to combat child trafficking.

⭐Following the full implementation of EES (Electronic Entry System) in the European Union, electronic entry will be done with just your face, utilizing the biometric information provided at registration the first time you enter the EU after EES begins.

👨🏽‍👩🏾‍👧🏻‍👦🏻 Traveling with Children at Lisbon Airport

Families traveling with children under the age of 18, cannot use the electronic passport control lanes and must see an immigration officer using the “All Passports” lane. Families and individuals traveling together should all approach the officer together.

👶🏼Traveling with children under the age of 2

Families traveling with children under the age of 2 can use the priority lane.

♿Passengers with Disabilities at Lisbon Airport

Passengers traveling with disabilities can use the priority immigration lines when entering Portugal, even if not using disability assistance.

Passengers requiring wheelchair assistance, can request through their airline of through LIS “MyWay” services. If you have limited mobility or difficulty standing, it is recommended to secure assistance services when arriving and departing from Lisbon airport in the event lines and wait times are long.

MyWay will offer door to door assistance and assure easier transit through the airport and immigration process for those with mobility issues and other disabilities.

Passengers Traveling with Hidden Disabilities

If you are traveling with a hidden disability, or have a child with a hidden disability, you can use the priority lane. You may be redirected by staff, but I have heard there is no issue stating you have a disability and being permitted to use the priority lane without issue.

Feedback from many parents traveling with autistic children has also said that the sunflower lanyard is recognized by staff at Lisbon airport.

Once You Have Cleared Immigration

Once you have cleared passport control, exit the arrivals hall and follow signs to the baggage claim. If you have checked baggage, consult the overhead screens for which carousel to find your luggage.

Collect your luggage and proceed toward the exit.

There will often be a line to exit the terminal, as all arriving passengers are filtered through two single-file lines to pass a final customs screening.

Once you have passed through this line, CONGRATULATIONS! You have officially arrived in Lisbon.

🛫Navigating Lisbon Airport: Departures

Now that you have had the best vacation of your life and are contemplating moving to Portugal, it is sadly time to head home and to navigate LIS once again.

Departing Lisbon Airport is a similar process to arriving, but in reverse… and with a few nuances.

The process will look like this:

Arrive at LIS terminal 1 ➡️Check in/Drop bags➡️go through electronic gates➡️security➡️passport control➡️go to gate ➡️ 🛫

Let’s break this down so you know what to expect:

🕑What Time to Arrive at Lisbon Airport?

The standard recommended three hours prior to international (non-Schengen) departures allows adequate time to make your flight.

For domestic flights and flights within the Schengen Zone, allow 90 minutes to two hours prior to departure.

“But I see on TikTok people missing their flights in Lisbon!”

In the vast majority of those cases, the people missing flights or barely making their flights, are waiting too long to go through passport control, then finding themselves scrambling to get through the line.

If you follow these very simple steps, you should have no issues making your flight, even on days with lengthy lines and immigration delays.

Be sure to note terminal open times:

Terminal 1 is open 24 hours a day. In the period between 00:30 - 03:00, access will only be allowed to passengers with boarding passes and/or reservations, staff and crews.

Terminal 2 is open from 03:30 to 00:30. Please note that the shuttle service between T1 and T2 does not operate between 01:30 and 03:30.

⭐Also note: For early morning flights (prior to 7am) Many airlines do not open for check-in until 2 hours prior to boarding.

🎫Lisbon Airport Check In

When you arrive at the airport, you will be in the T1 ‘Kiss and Fly’ parking lot. Enter the terminal and go upstairs (there is an escalator and elevator) and look for your airline check in counter.

➡️If you checked in on-line, have a boarding pass, and are not checking luggage, skip this step and proceed towards “all gates”.

There are electronic boards with check in desk information on both the ground floor and second floor that will indicate which desk is serving which airline.

This can be a bit confusing due to lack of signage and partner airlines sharing a counter (ie: KLM, AirFrance, and Delta), but don’t get overwhelmed, just take minute to pause and look around and find your check in desk. There is usually airport staff (in blue shirts) around to ask for help.

⭐Keep your boarding pass and passport handy.

🪪Security at LIS

Before getting to security, you will scan your boarding pass (QR code on electronic boarding card or your paper ticket), then go up the escalator or stairs toward security. You will also show your boarding pass to staff as you enter the security check point.

Security lines can look daunting but generally move quite quickly.

Like many other airports, the requirements for having to take liquids, laptops, etc out of bags seems to vary depending on the day and time, so just pay attention and be prepared to take things out if required.

⭐If you want to expedite the security process, you can pre-book Fast Track for €11.00. This will allow you access to expedited security lines. You can book Fast Track here.

*I personally don’t think Fast Track is necessary as the lines do move quite quickly and security is rarely the hold up, but some passengers like the reassurance.

🛂Immigration Departing Lisbon Airport

📢After Security: Proceed directly to Passport Control at the N Gates 📢

International flights from Lisbon depart from the N Gates (26-47), which are located at the end of a long corridor, that leads to passport control. The walk from security to the N Gates takes approximately 15 miutes.

Along the way, you will go through a large Duty-Free shop, pass numerous eateries and other shops/stores before seeing a large food court.

AFTER the food court is passport control.

Sometimes, the line is quite short, other times it snakes all the way down the corridor to (or passed) the McDonalds. *The McDonalds at the end of the food court is your North Star for immigration.

If you want to do some shopping, get something to eat, or go to a lounge before going through passport control, do so quickly and be sure to allow at least 90 minutes to get through passport control. In the majority of cases, you will not need this much time, but it is not worth missing your flight shopping, eating or lounging prior to your flight.

🍴🛍️There are Duty-Free shops, as well plenty of souvenir shops, cafes, and eateries after immigration in the N-Gate Hall.

💆🏼The new TAP Premium Lounge Atlântico is located after passport control in the N-Gate corridor. If you opt to enjoy another lounge prior to going through passport control, arrive early and be sure to leave the lounge with adequate time to clear immigration.

Electronic Passport (Automated Gates)

Electronic Passport works the same way exiting as it does to enter, however: you cannot exit using electronic passport to exit Portugal if you did not use it to enter. So, if you transited through another Schengen Country to enter Portugal (like France, Spain, Netherlands, etc), you cannot use the automated gates to exit.

Traveling With Children

This also works the same as arrivals: Children under 18 cannot use automated entry and must see an immigration officer via the “All Passports” lane, and families with children under 2 can use the priority lane.

Priority Lane

There is also a priority lane for exiting Portugal, which works the same as the priority lane entering.

You made it!

Once you have cleared passport control, you are almost in the clear!

The N-Gate Hall is quite long, so be sure to give adequate time to your gate, especially if you are departing from Gate 41-47.

There are several restrooms, water refill stations, and places to grab a bite to eat in the N-Gate hall so don’t worry about getting all that done prior to going through immigration.

You will be asked one last time for your passport and boarding pass prior to boarding and then will be on your way home… just to plan your return to Portugal, which will be a breeze now that you are an airport pro.

Lisbon Airport Domestic & Schengen Zone Flights

If you are flying withing Portugal or to another Schengen country, Lisbon airport is a breeze!

What are Schengen Region Countries?

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

Most domestic and Schengen Area flights depart from Terminal 2 . Be sure to check your specific airline/flight/

If you are dropped off at the wrong terminal, no worries, there is a shuttle bus that runs between the terminals every 15 or so minutes.

The process is the same as any domestic flight: check in ➡️security➡️*gate

⭐If you are new to European travel, especially budget airlines, here are a few things to be aware of:

The gate is typically not announced until 15 minutes before boarding. At Lisbon Airport, there is one large waiting area in Terminal 2 with screens announcing gates.

Don’t panic if your flight time is approaching and you don’t have a gate, the terminal is very small and you will be able to get to the gate easily for boarding, just keep an eye on the screen for your gate announcement.

Final Thoughts

CAN Lisbon airport be overwhelming, chaotic, and tedious to navigate? Absolutely.

Is that the norm? Absolutely not.

The vast majority of the time, LIS is a breeze to navigate, but it is always best to be prepared for delays and long lines, especially during peak travel times.

Using the tips and information in this guide, you will be able to easily navigate the airport, mitigate confusion and frustration and reduce stress at the beginning and end of your trip to Portugal.

If you happen to hit long lines, take a deep breathe, stay calm and know you will get there.
